School Pass
A mobile app for parents to track their kid's grades, attendance, calendar and lunch menu. Through a simple and clean user interface, parents and teachers can communicate directly with each other.
My Focus
My goals for this project were to focus on creating a beautiful visual interface for users. I experimented with typography, iconography and color schemes I thought best portrayed the idea behind the app. I also worked on branding and content strategy and developed the logo.
MOODBOARD INSPIRATION
When it comes to designing something new, I really take my time on getting the information right before thinking of what it’s going to look like. This part of the process takes me a long time to find something that’s stylish and conveys the right tone.
Dribbble is good for finding trendy styles or patterns that may help with the layout and give guidance on styles/trends. Rounded avatars is an example of this. I take this inspiration and head into Sketch to turn my sketches into something with personality.
Design principles
These are 3 main design principles I kept in mind while designing this app.
Typography and Color
I chose playful font and complimentary color scheme I thought associated well with elementary schools.
Onboarding
When a user opens your app for the first time it's crucial to make the right impression. This part is more subjective in nature since it involves marketing, imagery, iconography, etc. I designed a three screen introduction to show users the benefits of the app.
HOme screen and more
I created a number of concept screens above.
1. Home screen - Parents can see what's next on the calendar and have access to their kid's grade book and lunch menu.
2. Grade book - Parents can easily scroll and view their kids grades in chronological order.
3. Out today - Parents can let their kid's teacher know they are out sick by simply pressing the button on top.
4. Calendar - Parents can see upcoming school events and days off/breaks from class.
5. Lunch Menu - Parents can see the school's lunch menu in advance in case they want to pack their kid lunch a certain day.
What I Learned
During this project I learned a lot about branding. By using the right name, logo, typography and color scheme you can really make a design much more impactful. An app should be cohesive from start to finish. I also did a lot of research on user on-boarding. You really want to make a great first impression and ease a user into signing up. It's important to make them feel comfortable right from the start.
